Do you know many mothers who became millionaires just because they had children? Or become mothers because they are lazy and want to be fed by the state?
\nNo? Neither do we.
\n\u27a1\ufe0f Because it's an old wives' tale.
\nThis narrative persists - often spread by people who have never done unpaid care work, worked part-time or put their career on hold for others.
\n\ud83d\udd25Here are the facts:
\n- Mothers lose an average of 61 % of their income in the first ten years after giving birth - fathers? Zero.
\n- In western Germany, mothers earn up to \u20ac900,000 less, in eastern Germany up to \u20ac536,000 less.
\n- Part-time work, discrimination and fewer opportunities for promotion result in a permanent career setback.
\n- Poverty in old age is often pre-programmed - especially if the so-called \"mothers' pension\" is abolished.
\n- Unpaid care work is part of everyday life: mothers* do around 44 % more unpaid work than men.
\n- Role stereotypes and conservative gender norms cement this inequality.<\/p>\n
Motherhood is not an economic decision.
\nIt is deeply personal - and must not be a financial risk. And yet it is socially and socio-politically important. As our society ages, families and lifestyles become more diverse and social support becomes increasingly important, one thing is certain: nothing works without care work. It is the foundation of our future.<\/p>\n
